What Hair Clients Won’t Tell You About Finding the Perfect Stylist

In the lively area of Hollywood, Eric Taylor talks to people on the street to learn about the secrets of the hairstylist-client relationship. This happens during the Latin American Music Awards, and these interviews show us how people choose the right hairstylist and what goes on behind the scenes.

As the interviews go on, we hear from a mix of people from different backgrounds, and they share their stories and preferences, which help us understand the world of hairstyling better. Among this diverse group, each person’s story adds something unique to the big picture.

Sarah and her friend from England talk about how they want their hairstylist to make their hair look the same every time, even when they go to different salons. They don’t say it directly, but they trust recommendations from friends and sometimes look at pictures on Instagram to find the right hairstylist.

Omer, who’s from Chicago, talks about how he had to change hairstylists when his old barber shop changed ownership. He doesn’t say it, but he feels comfortable with his new hairstylist because they know him well.

Karina’s story spans continents, with her hairstylist suggestions coming from her Ukrainian aunt and online platforms like Yelp. This shows how she uses both traditional recommendations and modern tools.

Lindsey uses recommendations from friends to start, but she later turns to Instagram to help her decide. What hair clients won’t tell you is that a hairstylist’s online presence matters a lot when searching for a new one.

Ashlyn and Dedra show us how important friends’ opinions and social media are in their hairstylist choices. They quietly rely on their friends’ advice and use Facebook and Instagram to find hairstylists.

Chantry and Matt, who are new to Los Angeles, talk about the challenges of finding a hairstylist in a new place. Chantry chooses a stylist nearby, but she really wants the best experience. Matt uses Instagram to search for hairstylists, which helps him in a new city.

All these stories together reveal the hidden ways people choose their hairstylists. They use old-fashioned suggestions and new tools like Instagram and Yelp. What they don’t always say out loud is that the hairstylist-client relationship is built on personal connections, pictures, and the search for the perfect match.

Alfredo Lewis’s Journey of Adaptation and Impact in the Hair World

Date

Author

Alfredo Lewis shares his journey from aspiring actor to influential figure in the hair industry. Raised near Disneyland in Orange County, California, Alfredo’s initial aspiration was to become an actor. After a year of pursuing acting and feeling unfulfilled, he stumbled upon an interview with actress Debi Mazar, who found success in the movie industry through hairstyling. Intrigued by the idea of making connections while having a backup plan, he enrolled in beauty school part-time to explore hairstyling as a potential career.

Initially attending LA Trade Tech for its flexible schedule, he soon transitioned to a more expensive school, Yamano Beauty College. The unique setup of his classes allowed for more one-on-one interactions with instructors, which enhanced his learning experience.

Alfredo’s perspective shifted when Instagram and the B3 Brazilian Bond Builder product were on the rise. At that point, he realized the significance of social media in the hair industry and its potential for business growth. Alfredo’s personal Instagram, however, primarily featured non-hair-related content. This changed with the emergence of B3, which pushed him to create a dedicated Instagram presence for hair-related content.

His expertise in B3 and influencer marketing led to him being hired by Behind the Chair (BTC). His impact on B3 was substantial, as he built a network of 90 influencers who promoted the product. Collaborations and partnerships with other artists further boosted his Instagram following. Mary Rector-Gable, the founder of BTC, recognized his potential and invited him to join BTC to offer his insights into the business side of the industry.

Mary aimed to leverage Alfredo’s experience to navigate the evolving landscape of the hair industry. With increasing changes and challenges, the industry requires careful consideration of contracts, fair compensation, and artist protection. Alfredo’s journey showcases the power of adapting, embracing opportunities, and utilizing social media to reshape one’s career trajectory in a rapidly changing industry.

Balancing Salon Charm and Retail Products: A Dive into Hair Care Preferences

Date

September 26, 2023

Author

Salon Republic

In sunny Santa Monica, Eric Taylor and Donovan set out to explore people’s preferences when it comes to buying hair care products. Engaging with individuals against the backdrop of beachside beauty, they initiate conversations to uncover choices and motivations regarding shampoo, conditioner, and styling items. Their central question revolves around whether customers prefer obtaining these products from salons or exploring options such as Amazon or Target.

As they meet JD and Gabby, friends hailing from different places, the duo inquires about their salon experiences. JD, an Australian, visits the salon every six to seven weeks for hair coloring. In contrast, Gabby, hailing from Seattle, expresses her preference for product recommendations from her hairdresser, which she believes better suits her hair type compared to the overwhelming variety at stores. She obtains her hair products from a salon in Hollywood. Though she initially purchases from the salon, Gabby opts for online platforms if prices are more reasonable.

Adding an amusing twist to the story, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-hoon make a comedic cameo. Engaging in playful hair-related banter, they reveal their contrasting styles and humorously comment on the diversion of the discussion from their diplomatic talks.

Further down the line, Will, Jordan, and John from Kansas City disclose that they either cut their hair themselves or have friends do it for them. They mention purchasing shampoo and conditioner from local stores without much thought. Despite their infrequent salon visits, they indicate a willingness to consider seeking professional advice for hair care products, particularly if it comes recommended by their hairdresser.

Now shifting the focus to Kyle and Michelle, the narrative reveals their differing salon preferences. While Michelle frequents a neighborhood barber, Kyle leans towards hair salons. For Michelle, the sway of her barber’s recommendations could impact her decision to purchase products from him. Meanwhile, Kyle emphasizes how a hairstylist’s expertise might influence his choice to purchase recommended products.

Bringing in a fresh perspective, Christina, a visitor from Mexico, shares insights about her hair salon visits where she undergoes monthly haircuts and colorings. Interestingly, she purchases her hair products from a pharmacy rather than the salon. Although she doesn’t receive product recommendations from her hairstylist, she actively seeks advice from store salespeople, particularly when it comes to selecting organic options.

Transitioning to another viewpoint, Danielle, a hairstylist from Vegas, offers valuable insights into the world of selling salon products. She emphasizes the importance of offering professional products that are tailored to her clients’ specific needs. Danielle notes that suggesting products is key, as customers are more likely to make a purchase when they trust the stylist’s advice.

The interviews conclude with a discussion between Eric and a hairdresser named Danielle, who delve into the challenges of retailing products within a salon setting. Danielle highlights the significance of hair extensions as a major service and advocates for clients to use the products she recommends to maintain their hair’s health and appearance. Clients often follow her recommendations, especially when they align with the stylist’s expertise and the desired outcome.

Throughout these interviews, a recurring theme emerges: the profound influence of hairstylist recommendations on customers’ purchasing decisions. The majority of individuals express a readiness to buy products suggested by their hairdressers, indicating a strong sense of trust in their expertise. Moreover, some interviewees underscore the importance of maintaining their desired hair appearance between salon visits, with the convenience of purchasing products directly from the salon proving appealing, especially when the recommendations are personalized and align with their hair care needs.

In the world of hair care, the hairstylist’s role as a trusted advisor becomes evident, effectively bridging the gap between salon services and retail products. Be it shampoo, conditioner, or styling products, customers place considerable value on expert advice and guidance. As the sun sets gracefully over Santa Monica’s picturesque backdrop, these interviews brilliantly highlight the intricate relationship between salon experiences and the ongoing pursuit of hair care excellence.

What Clients Are Thinking But Won’t Tell You: Salon Experience Faves & Fails

Date

September 20, 2023

Salon Republic

In sunny Santa Monica, Eric Taylor from “The Hair Game” takes a deep dive into the world of local salons. He talks to people and captures their honest thoughts about what it’s like to visit these beauty spots. Against the backdrop of beautiful California weather, Taylor has conversations that reveal both the good and not-so-good parts of these beauty havens.

For many folks, going to a salon feels like entering a world of pampering. The joy of being pampered is a big part of the attraction. People love the luxurious treatments and the careful attention they get, which makes them feel like a whole new person. One person Eric talked to said that getting a fresh haircut and style made them feel confident and revitalized. This newfound self-assuredness shines through, making salon visits an important way for people to feel rejuvenated.

The atmosphere of the salon also plays a big role in shaping the experience. Taylor’s interviewees describe salons with trendy, spacious spaces where you can enjoy live music and even grab a coffee. This mix of art and hospitality creates an environment where customers can delight in music and tasty treats. This unique blend of elements makes the salon visit more exciting and enjoyable.

However, these conversations also bring up some common complaints. One recurring issue is about communication and expectations. It can be tough to describe exactly how you want your hair styled, and sometimes, the result falls short of what you imagined. Some customers worry about finding a stylist who truly understands their unique vision for their hair. This problem comes from the fact that everyone’s preferences are different, and it’s not always easy to make sure the stylist gets it just right.

Time is another potential challenge in the salon experience. One person mentioned how frustrating it can be for people with thick, long hair to spend a long time getting their hair done. The time it takes for haircuts can be quite long, and even though the salon might offer things like coffee and music to pass the time, some people still find it hard to wait. This highlights the need for salons to find a balance between providing quality service and being efficient with time.

Even something as simple as washing hair can be an issue. Many people don’t like water getting into their ears during shampooing. It might seem like a small complaint, but it shows that even tiny details can affect how customers feel about their salon experience.

The conversations also touch on the interaction between clients and stylists. While chatting can be enjoyable, some patrons prefer a more peaceful experience and feel obliged to engage in small talk. Striking the right balance between conversation and quiet time is important to cater to different preferences. The challenge is to create an environment where both extroverted and introverted patrons feel comfortable.

The interviews also highlight the importance of managing appointments effectively. Sometimes, people suddenly realize they need a haircut before an event and wish they had booked in advance. This shows how convenient it is for salons to offer pre-scheduled appointments to meet the needs of customers, even when they need a last-minute spot.

In a lighthearted twist, Taylor also talks about situations where stylists might talk a little too much, potentially overwhelming clients. This brings attention to the delicate art of conversation in the salon context. While a friendly chat is appreciated, stylists also need to be mindful of their clients’ comfort levels, allowing them to fully enjoy the relaxation and personal transformation that come with the visit.

In the end, Eric Taylor’s exploration of salon experiences reveals a mix of feelings. The joy of being pampered, the revitalization after a fresh haircut, and the role of the salon’s atmosphere all stand out as positives. But these interviews also show the challenges of matching expectations, managing time, and finding the right balance in interactions. These personal conversations give us a peek into the intricate world of salon visits, shedding light on both the pleasures and complexities that make this part of personal care special.

Become Your Own Boss: The Benefits of a Stylist Studio Rental

Date

September 19, 2023

Author

Salon Republic

A growing trend in the beauty industry, stylist studio rentals offer hairstylists the freedom to start their own businesses without the cost and risk of opening a full-scale salon. But how do they differ from a booth rental or commission-based salon? And what’s the best way to find the most reliable stylist studio services on the market? We answer these questions and more, offering tips and tricks on how to rent a salon studio and become your own boss.

The Basics of Stylist Studio Rentals

Unlike renting a stylist chair or booth in an open environment salon, a stylist studio offers more privacy, freedom, and flexibility. But what exactly is it, and how is it different?

For starters, a salon studio is a private suite available to rent within a larger community of hairstylists and other beauty professionals. It gives stylists the privacy and freedom to run their business however they wish.

Typically, rent is paid weekly with the option to keep renewing after a one-year rental agreement is completed. On average, rent can range from $275-$550 a week, depending on location, size of the suite, and amenities.

The Benefits of Using Stylist Studio Rental Services

Not only do stylist studio rentals give beauty professionals their own personal space, but they also come with a wide array of benefits. Here are a few perks.

More profit

One of the most significant advantages of moving to a stylist salon studio rental from a commission-based salon is being able to keep 100% of your service and retail income. Once you pay your rent and your business expenses, the rest is yours!

You’ll also need significantly less start-up capital since your rent should cover the overhead expenses like utilities, maintenance, etc. Most salon studio rentals for hair stylists also come move-in ready with Wi-Fi for merchant processing and equipment like styling chairs and shampoo bowls.

Freedom and flexibility

When you rent a stylist studio, you have the freedom to create your own hours, choose your own products, decide which services to provide, and how much you want to charge for your services. It’s your business, and you get to run it any way you want.

You’ll also have complete creative control. From the paint on the walls to music, you get to decide the look and feel of your space. You also get to run your own promotions, choose how you market your business, and create the type of content that reflects your brand and particular techniques.

Control over clientele

At a traditional salon, you’ll likely be taking on an established clientele. But at a beauty salon studio rental, you get to choose the clients you want and focus on your skills and specialties.
For example, perhaps you’re an expert at balayage and are able to deliver results in half the time it takes other stylists. Having your own salon studio rental will let you market yourself to a clientele looking for efficiency. You can then adjust your prices accordingly to meet demand.

A stylist studio rental allows you to easily start your own business.

How to Choose the Best Stylist Studio Rental Service for Your Needs

Ready to rent a stylist studio but don’t know where to start? Here are a few tips to help you find the best space and services for your needs.

Research the location

Your stylist studio rental should be in a location that’s easy to get to and find, offering parking or walkability. It should also be in a place that your target market frequents,  near businesses where they run errands, like grocery stores and pharmacies.

Once you’ve found a place you like, book a tour and visit the salon suite rental to see firsthand if it has everything you need. While you’re there, chat with the beauty professionals at the salon space to get an insider look into the community.

You’ll also want to look at the competitors in the area and what services and prices they’re offering. That way, you can see if there’s space for you in the current market.

Consider the size and layout

In addition to the location, consider the size of your beauty salon studio. Will you be sharing the space with another hairstylist, and does the location charge extra to do that? How much space do you need to offer your services to your clients?

You’ll also want an aesthetically pleasing and customizable space to showcase your brand style. For instance, high ceilings in a salon suite rental can add a luxurious feel, while stylish finishes provide a chic backdrop for clients to post on social media from your studio.

The space should also be functional. Before committing to a lease, create a blueprint of how you’ll set things up to see if it will work for your day-to-day.

Find the right amenities and support

Look at the supportive amenities the salon rental offers before signing an agreement to see if they can help elevate your business. For example, does it provide free on-site laundry facilities and towel service? Can you market your company on the main website? And do they offer different workshops and classes for you to continue to elevate your skillset?

You’ll also want to see what’s included in your rent, like professional liability insurance, which is essential to protecting your career, finances, and business reputation.

Stylist Studio Rentals at Salon Republic

At Salon Republic, our stylist studios are more than just a studio for rent. They’re a place where like-minded independent beauty professionals can share their talents side-by-side, creating an environment full of inspiration where your business can thrive.

Andrew Does Hair joins Eric Taylor on The Hair Game Podcast.
Andrew Does Hair (left) with The Hair Game Podcast host Eric Taylor.

Eric Taylor, founder and owner of Salon Republic, interviews Andrew from Andrew Does Hair. Andrew shares his journey from a high school dropout to a renowned hair stylist. He started by cutting his own hair and his friends’ hair, which led him to cosmetology school. Despite his interest in men’s hair, he was advised to focus on women’s hair to earn more. However, he found his passion in men’s hair and started gaining recognition on Instagram for his unique approach to styling.

Andrew’s success on Instagram was accidental. He stood out because he focused on styling hair in a world where most were focusing on fades. He also started reading books by Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Jim Collins to understand how he could replicate his success. Andrew cites Tab Salzman as a significant influence on his business approach. Salzman helped him think differently about his career and pricing. He also mentions Jody Taylor as an influence on his creativity and technical skill.

Andrew is excited about reducing his hours and raising his prices, allowing him to focus on the work he enjoys. He now works 10 to 16 hours a week, taking his time with each client. He is also excited about helping other hair stylists and barbers improve their grind to income ratio, helping them have their ideal career.

Andrew advises hair stylists and barbers to raise their prices when they are too busy and stressed. He suggests having a side barber to send clients to when they raise their prices. He also recommends having tiered services and having a high-priced item on the price list to make clients feel special. Andrew shares that he does three different kinds of haircuts: for paying clients, on stage when teaching, and for photo shoots. He knows a haircut is finished when it moves the way he wants it to. He also shares his advice on photography, emphasizing the importance of understanding different lighting conditions.

The Hair Game

Welcome to The Hair Game, the brainchild of Salon Republic! With over 20 years in the salon studio business, we’ve seen a lot change (or not change). Hairdressers are taking control of their business, brand, and style. Owning your own business as an indie hairdresser has never been this reachable before! We wanted to create another resource for you because our goal is (and has always been) to help as many hairdressers as we can find success.

One of the biggest shifts is the importance of digital content (especially video) on social media platforms. On The Hair Game, we’ll be sharing candid interviews with the salon industry’s most interesting people, how-to videos on things you care about, business advice from great beauty pros (but not great biz people), marketing tips, and some behind the scenes of how we do things at Salon Republic.

There are a few ways you can find content from The Hair Game. First is the audio podcast hosted by our CEO, Eric Taylor. We release a new episode every Monday morning and have over 300 episodes full of valuable info for the hair entrepreneur. We cover everything from price increases to the client experience. Each guest brings unique insight into the keys to becoming successful.

We also have video versions of the full episodes, along with virtual education and instructional and entertaining vlogs with beauty pros, on The Hair Game YouTube Channel! Click here to watch & subscribe: https://youtu.be/Kt-dJlfLQr0

Finally, you can find short bits of all this valuable info and content on our Instagram pages! Find us on Instagram here:

Whichever way you follow and consume our content, we would love your feedback! Hit us up in the dms, comment, and let us know what you think.
