Business Strategy for Hairstylists with Kimberly Marie

Date

November 2, 2023

Author

Salon Republic

Hairstylist coach Kimberly Marie helps hairstylists manage the business aspects.
Hairstylist coach Kimberly Marie discusses helping stylists with the business aspects of hair.

This interview with Kimberly, a hairdresser from Seattle, Washington, with 14 years of experience is about business strategy for hairstylists. She’s also the founder of “Next Level Hairstylist,” a platform aimed at providing guidance to hairstylists. The interview discusses Kimberly’s journey into the hair industry, her insights on improving the hairstylist’s experience behind the chair, and her thoughts on pricing and structuring hours.

Kimberly initially joined beauty school as a hobby, falling in love with hairstyling. She shares the concept of wearing two hats: the hairstylist hat and the business owner hat. The key to improvement is recognizing when to switch between these roles. Kimberly also suggests that hairdressers often excel creatively but struggle with the business aspect. Separating these roles and making business decisions with a business owner perspective is crucial.

She suggests several strategies that can enhance a hairstylist’s experience behind the chair:

  • Business Hat vs. Hairstylist Hat: Distinguish between the creative hairstylist role and the business owner role. Make decisions that align with the business aspect, such as setting prices and enforcing policies.
  • Structured Business Hours: Instead of working excessive hours to attract clients, create a structured schedule that aligns with your long-term goals. This approach creates demand and a sense of value for your time.
  • Value of Your Time: Structured hours convey the value of your time to clients, potentially leading to greater client appreciation and loyalty.
  • Balancing Pressure and Structured Hours: While new hairdressers may feel pressure to accommodate clients, striking a balance between accommodating and setting structured hours is essential. This prevents burnout and establishes a valuable relationship with clients who value your time.
  • Pricing Strategy: Determine your pricing based on your market, your worth, and the services you offer. Research other salons to gain insights into the market, but avoid basing prices solely on competition.
  • Pricing Evolution: The pricing landscape is changing, with more hairdressers offering bundled services, hourly rates, and transparent pricing menus. Knowing your hourly worth and factoring in product, travel, and other costs is crucial.

Kimberly emphasizes that finding the balance between creative passion and business acumen is essential for long-term success. Understanding the value of your time, structuring your business hours, and setting appropriate prices can create a fulfilling and sustainable career behind the chair. The discussion sheds light on the dynamic and evolving nature of hairstyling as both a creative and business endeavor.

Social Media for Hairstylists with Don Godfrey, from @nothingbutpixies

Date

October 31, 2023

Author

Salon Republic

The video features an interview with Don Godfrey, an expert consultant in the field of social media, focusing on content creation and optimization rather than the term “influencer.” He’s informally known as the “Don of Social Media.” The interview delves into Don’s journey, expertise, and how he became a sought-after figure in the social media space.

Don shares that he initially noticed the rising trend of people using platforms like Facebook and Twitter to gain popularity. He was already skilled in online selling through platforms like Craigslist and WebShots, and this experience laid the foundation for his future in social media. In the early days of Instagram (around 2012-2013), Don created a page called “Nothing But Pixies.” He began posting celebrity and client photos related to pixie cuts, attracting attention from well-known hairstylists.

Don’s expertise and unique content caught the attention of hairstylists like Be Scene, Ricky, and Wes, who began reaching out to him for guidance on managing their social media accounts. Don explains that his pages were born out of a hobby and a passion for the industry. Over time, his pages gained significant followers, and he learned to adapt and evolve his content.

He expanded his brand to include “All About Hair” to cater to the growing popularity of vivids and longer hairstyles. These pages quickly grew to have over 100k followers each. Combining his highest-following pages, he now has a combined follower count of around 1.1 million.

Don emphasizes the importance of setting clear goals for one’s social media strategy. For new hairdressers aiming to build a clientele, he suggests focusing on that goal before seeking sponsorships or other opportunities. He likens the process to a marathon, with consistent effort over time.

The interview shifts to discussing strategies for optimizing a hairstylist’s Instagram profile. Don suggests carefully choosing a profile title that includes relevant keywords and location names for search engine optimization. He emphasizes the significance of creating a strong profile bio that functions as an elevator pitch. The bio should convey the hairstylist’s name, location, services offered, a brief description, and contact information.

Moving to content creation, Don advises new hairdressers to showcase their desired specialties. He recommends posting a well-rounded selection of content that represents the hairstylist’s skills, such as balayage, men’s cuts, and more. Don emphasizes that the content should reflect a 360-degree view of the hairstylist’s life, including personal interests and location-based elements. He even suggests posting non-hair related images that show local landmarks, hobbies, and activities.

Don’s approach is centered around building a brand that is authentic, personal, and appealing to potential clients. He encourages hairstylists to present themselves as real individuals, connecting with clients on a more personal level beyond just their skills.

In summary, Don Godfrey’s interview provides valuable insights into the world of social media content creation for hairstylists. His journey from Craigslist selling to becoming a recognized figure in the industry showcases the power of authentic engagement and strategic content planning in building a strong online presence.

Before you take the leap, you’ll need to find the best salon suite for your business needs. That’s where a salon suite tour comes into play.

Here’s everything you need to know about setting up a salon suite tour.

How to Find Salon Suites for Lease

Ask Fellow Beauty Pros

One of the best ways to find a salon suite for lease is to talk with other beauty professionals and ask them if they know of any salon studios in the area. You can also reach out to established independent professionals in your industry on social media platforms. Learning about their experiences firsthand can help you find the best space for your beauty business needs.

Online Search

The quickest way to find salon suite rentals in your area is through an online search. You’ll be able to see what locations are available as well as what amenities they offer. Most will have the option to book a tour directly on their website or a phone number to call and schedule one.

Preparing for a Salon Suite Tour

After researching potential salon suites for lease, narrow your list and contact the salon suite provider to book a tour.

Before visiting the space, come up with a list of questions to ask while you’re there. Prepare a checklist of everything you want and need beforehand to remember during the tour.

What to Expect on a Salon Suite Tour

While every salon suite tour will be unique, you can expect the following structure at most places:

  • A welcoming and informative person to answer all of your questions
  • A detailed walkthrough of the location and available salon suites
  • A discussion of the general lease terms and conditions
  • An outline of the amenities and additional services offered
  • A possible meeting with other salon professionals in the building (and/or a look at other styled spaces already up and running)
A salon suite tour will show you the layout of the location and additional amenities offered.

Questions to Ask During a Salon Suite Tour

Having a list of questions for your tour guide will help ensure you get all the information you need during your visit. Here are five essential questions to ask.

  1. What are the terms and the length of the lease? Before signing a lease, make sure you have all the details nailed down, like the length of the lease term, if there is a security deposit, and what happens if you need to break the lease.
  2. What’s included in the price? Check if utilities, Wi-Fi, and maintenance are included in the rent. Many salon suites also include essential equipment like a styling chair and shampoo bowl/chair (or sink).
  3. Can I customize the salon suite? Some salon suites have pre-built cabinetry and shelving, while others allow you complete customization to create your own vibe.
  4. What other perks do you offer? Some salon suite rentals provide the space, and that’s it. Others, like Salon Republic, include supportive business amenities, such as free technical and business education, an on-site salon manager, complimentary towel service, and an in-salon beauty supply store.
  5. What hours is the salon suite available? Ask if the space is only available during specific hours or if you’ll have 24/7 access to your salon studio to create your own schedule and come in whenever you want.

Making a Decision

Once you’ve toured various salon suites, it’s time to evaluate your options. When deciding on a space, consider the answers to your questions, along with the location, pricing, and lease terms. Compare the supportive amenities that each space provides to determine how much of your time can be spent focusing on your clients.

Common Concerns and FAQs

1. What are the benefits of renting a salon suite?

Renting a salon suite gives you your own private space to be your own boss and have complete creative control over your business. And you get to keep 100% of the income from services and product sales.

Leasing salon space allows you to focus more on your clients and build your brand.

Opening your own salon is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your beauty career. However, when it comes to owning a salon, you may not want to own every aspect of the business. The costs associated with starting a business are high, and you may not know where to turn if you need help. When you lease, there are lower start-up costs, lower maintenance costs, lease flexibility, and in some cases, the ability to share resources.

You are still your own boss while leasing a salon space. Some suite rentals also provide supportive amenities that make running your business easier, so you can focus more on your clients and building your brand.  Whether you’re a hairstylist, makeup artist, or other professional in the beauty industry, this article can benefit you. Let’s take a look at the information you need to make an informed decision about leasing a salon space and how to maximize the experience.

Factors to Consider When Leasing Salon Space

When leasing, you want to know all the specifics of your lease and know your rights as a tenant. No question is too small, and no question is too silly. If you’re going to rent, it’s within your rights to ask any and every question you feel needs answered so you can iron out the details before you sign a lease.

What is a Lease Agreement?

A lease agreement is a legal contract between two parties: the property owner and the party that wants to pay to use a space for a designated amount of time. The lease agreement specifies the rights and obligations of both parties, such as the rent amount, the duration, and the conditions of the property.

Essential Elements of a Lease Agreement

The terms of your lease are very important to your business. A lease agreement should include the following information:

  • Date of the agreement
  • Name and address of the salon + unit number you will be renting
  • First and last name of the owner/company (lessor)
  • First and last name of the renter/s (lessee/s)
  • Start and end date + total length of agreement
  • Rental rate
  • Rent due date and payment frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)
  • Amount of security deposit (if included)
  • Penalties for late/insufficient payments
  • Details of the space, equipment, and other resources included in the rent
  • What the studio rental will be used for, and any restrictions
  • Terms of lease termination
  • Rules to adhere to during occupancy
  • Permits/licenses, tax, and insurance obligations
  • Signatures of both parties
  • Signed date of the rental agreement

Make sure you read and understand the lease agreement before signing it. If you have any questions or concerns, ask the property owner for clarification.

Benefits of Leasing Salon Space

When considering whether to purchase or lease a salon space, it’s essential to think about how each one will benefit you as a business owner. Here are a few ways leasing a salon space will work to your benefit.

Lower Start-Up Cost

When leasing a salon space, it requires less up-front capital than owning a storefront salon — beneficial for anyone starting out.

Lower Maintenance Costs

You rent the space, which means you don’t have to spend extra money on repairs and maintenance on the building. Your time and money are spent only on your business.

Lease Flexibility

Leasing gives you more flexible terms to customize your space. You can create your own unique environment and brand.

Shared Salon Suite Rental

You can reduce your expenses by sharing your salon space with other beauty professionals. Sharing a salon suite with others can also allow you to have a much larger, luxurious environment for your clients.  Think of the endless creativity you’ll experience by sharing with other beauty talents!

Important Aspects of the Lease Agreement

The lease agreement is where all of your legal and financial responsibilities will be documented. Knowing the difference between a good and bad agreement will help protect you from future issues. Here are six important aspects to pay attention to.

Written Lease Agreement

A verbal lease agreement may hold up in some courts, but relying upon an oral agreement runs a high risk of dispute over the terms agreed to. A written lease agreement protects both parties involved by laying out the terms and conditions upfront — covering things like the cost of rent, what’s included in the rental rate, and the lease length.

Specifics in the Lease

Make sure your lease agreement is very specific.  Any necessary alterations to the property should be documented. Do not use generic rental contracts. Make your leases specific to your business, location, condition of the space, and your industry. An apartment rental agreement is much different than a business agreement, so be sure the terms are specific to your case.

Security Deposit

A security deposit will protect against minor tenant damage to the property. They don’t protect against major damage, so you will also need insurance that should cover those costs if needed. They also do not protect against rent default or lawsuits. Make sure you read and understand your lease agreement concerning your security deposit.

Move-in Specials

Move-in specials are usually a one-time or limited-time offer. They are typically offered during the first month of your lease and when demand is low. A move-in special can sometimes include waived application fees, reduced or waived security deposit, first month rent-free (or discounted), and special deals on longer lease lengths. Any special offer upon move-in should be clearly documented in your agreement.

Breaking the Lease

If you choose to break your lease, expect to incur penalties. Landlord-tenant laws that allow you to break the lease are different from state to state. If you don’t have a legal reason to break the lease, your landlord may be allowed to impose a financial penalty. Be sure your agreement clearly states what happens if you break your lease and what you will be legally responsible for.

Costs Included in the Rental Rate

Some salon spaces may include costs such as maintenance, Wi-Fi, and utilities, in the rental rate.. These should be documented in your lease agreement. Clarify any other costs you may be responsible for (e.g. parking, laundry facilities, insurance) so you can find your total rental price.
